Not a yoga short. Not a legging. A biker short is mid-thigh-to-knee compression doing a job, so this page treats compression as an engineered quantity: spandex ratio, fabric weight and recovery score, each with a working spec you can hold us to.
"Compression" is the most abused word in activewear sourcing. A short can feel tight on day one and be dead by wash fifteen. The hold your customer feels at month three is decided by three measurable variables locked at the tech-pack stage.
| Variable | Our Working Spec | What Happens When It's Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Spandex ratio | 18–22% spandex against a 78–82% nylon face on the 4-way platform | Low-spandex knits get their "tightness" from a smaller pattern, not fibre recovery — the garment strangles range of motion early and bags out at the knee within weeks |
| Fabric weight | Compression cuts run the heavy end of the platform's 180–260 gsm window | A light knit pulled to compression tension goes sheer at the seat — the squat-flash complaint that triggers most marketplace returns in this category |
| Elastic recovery | Scored as rebound after a 100-cycle stretch-and-wash protocol before a lot is approved | Fabric that scores poorly here is why a sample reviews well and the bulk run earns "lost its shape" reviews at month two |
Each cut serves a different buyer. Compression interlock sells to hot yoga studios. Scrunch booty sells to IG-first DTC brands. Longline sells to modesty-market customers. Choose one or mix across SKUs.
Buyers often confuse the two categories. This table maps the structural and commercial differences so your sourcing decision is precise from day one.
| Dimension | Yoga Biker Shorts | Yoga Shorts |
|---|---|---|
| Inseam Length | 5"–10" (mid-thigh to past-knee) | 2"–4" (high-cut, minimal coverage) |
| Coverage Range | Full thigh — prevents skin-on-skin contact | Hip & upper thigh only |
| Body Fit | Compression tight, body-mapped sculpting | Relaxed-to-semi-fitted, fabric drape |
| Best Use Case | Cycling, Pilates, hot yoga, barre, strength training | Casual yoga, running, summer athleisure |
| Styling Context | Worn alone or layered with an oversized tee | Pairs with a crop top or sports bra |
| Retail Positioning | Studio staple — year-round repeat category | Seasonal — peaks in spring/summer drops |
The seamless cut requires circular-knit fabric and can't be substituted. The compression cut needs interlock with high recovery. The other cuts can run on either nylon-spandex or recycled poly depending on your eco positioning.
Inseam length and waistband style are set on the tech pack before sample production. Both affect grading across XS-3XL and can't be changed after sample approval without a revision fee.
Size-inclusive lines fail in the upper sizes first, and almost always for the same reason: the factory graded girth and forgot geometry. These are the rules behind our XS–3XL biker block.
A compression short has no drape to hide behind: a small deviation reads as a fit defect on the body. These are the hold points written into every biker tech pack we run.
Engineering only matters if the line can execute it on schedule. These are the operating parameters a biker shorts PO books against — the same figures our planners use, not marketing approximations.
| Parameter | Working Value | Engineering Note |
|---|---|---|
| Line allocation | Dedicated bottoms sewing line | Cut-and-sew biker cuts queue here; the seamless cut books circular-knit machine time instead, so plan it one window earlier |
| 500-pc colorway | 15–22 days on line | Counted from fabric release to pre-shipment inspection, not from deposit |
| 2,000-pc program | 25–32 days on line | Volume break at 2,000 pcs also deepens the Tier-3 discount |
| Factory throughput | 120k pcs/month all lines | Bottoms account for over half of shipped volume — biker capacity is structural, not borrowed |
| Indicative FOB, basic spec | $5.20–$5.95 pilot / $4.55–$5.20 working / $3.70–$4.50 volume | Per piece, USD; decoration class and packaging tier move a quote inside its band |
| Pilot entry | 50 pcs per style per colour | Sizes mix freely inside the band once the size curve is approved |
| Inspection standard | AQL 2.5, stop-shipment authority | Sampled pieces re-checked under stretch at final audit — compression defects only show under load |
