Which base holds a ribbed compression crop — and which one carries a bra shelf?

The built-in bra cut needs a four-way stretch nylon that can support a shelf seam. The ribbed crop needs a cotton-modal blend that holds compression without hand-feel loss after 50 washes.

Hem & Torso Engineering

What changes in the pattern room when the hem moves above the navel.

Cropping a torso is not a trim operation — it relocates the garment's anchor point from the hip to the ribcage, and every construction decision downstream follows from that. Here is what our pattern team re-derives on each cropped style.

Hem finish by cut position

At-navel and above-navel cuts get a banded hem with encased elastic, because the hem rides over the leggings waistband and must grip through inversions and overhead reach. Longline cuts sitting below the waistband pressure zone take a flat coverstitched hem instead — an elastic band there would print a visible ridge through outer layers.

Anchor geometry on a short torso

A full-length top is held in place by hip friction; a crop is held almost entirely by the underbust and hem zones. We tighten the hem circumference relative to the body measurement on cropped blocks and ease the bust slightly, shifting hold to where the garment can actually anchor. Skip this rebalancing and the crop migrates upward on every sun salutation.

Shelf seam placement in 2-in-1 builds

In a built-in-bra crop, the shelf hem and the garment hem sit only a few centimetres apart. If both carry firm elastic, the strips fight each other and the torso panel buckles between them. Our 2-in-1 block intentionally de-rates the outer hem elastic and lets the internal shelf do the support work — one of the reasons we sample this cut in stretch nylon rather than rib.

Proving the hem position on a body

Every cropped block earns its release the same way: first pattern on day one, a wearable sample off the table by day seven, and fit locked inside three to five iterations. The deciding check is physical — the sample goes through squats and overhead reach on a fit model, and a hem that creeps or flips sends the block back, whatever the spec sheet says.

Grading the ratio, not the measurement

Across the XS–3XL run we grade cropped lengths as a proportion of torso, so the visual cut point stays constant while the absolute hem measurement walks upward through the curve. Grading a fixed length instead is the classic outsourced-pattern mistake — it leaves the 3XL reading like a different garment than the XS on the same product page.

Rib direction and panel matching

On ribbed crops the wale lines are a visible design element across a small panel area, so a cut that drifts even slightly off-grain reads as a crooked garment. Cropped rib panels are cut single-ply with the rib running dead vertical, and front and back panels are matched from the same roll position to keep wale spacing identical at the side seams.

VARIABLE 01

Bra Shelf — None / Shelf / Shelf + Pad

A 2-in-1 shelf changes the whole elastic plan of the crop, so it must be decided before patterning, never retrofitted. Removable-pad pockets add a sewing operation but let one SKU serve two wear modes.

VARIABLE 02

Rib Gauge — 2×2 or 4×4

Gauge is a fit decision disguised as a texture decision: the tighter 2×2 wale grips and sculpts, the wider 4×4 relaxes into a drape. Pick per SKU intent, not per collection.

Hem Length

At-navel / above-navel / below-bra / longline (four variants). Length is graded proportionally per size — a 3XL gets a longer absolute hem to maintain the same visual ratio as XS.

From our standing mill library, four bases carry the crop top program. The short torso is forgiving in one direction and brutal in another — here is the logic, with the numbers.

Why 2-way works here when it fails on leggings: a cropped torso barely flexes along its vertical axis, so rib bases that stretch only in the round still move correctly — which is what lets us run a natural-fibre rib at 220–280 g/m² and keep the hand-feel cotton buyers expect. Gauge matters as much as weight: a 2×2 rib recovers harder and holds compression; a 4×4 reads softer and drapes, which suits longline lifestyle SKUs but will not deliver a "sculpting" claim. And on prints — sublimation needs the poly-majority bases (F04 or F02); ink simply will not bond into a 60% cotton rib, so logo work on ribbed cuts routes to embroidery or transfer instead.

QC On Cropped Silhouettes

The four defects we hunt hardest on crops — and where each gets stopped.

Our inspection frame is AQL 2.5 across five gates, with inspectors holding authority to halt a shipment. On this category, four failure modes dominate the risk list.

✕ Rib shade banding — rib structures exaggerate dye-lot variance, so adjacent panels from mixed rolls show as stripes. Stopped at the fabric-receiving gate: every roll is shade-graded against the approved lab dip and rolls are batched per garment, never mixed within one piece.
✕ Hem elastic over-tension — too-tight hem elastic turns an at-navel crop into a sausage casing that flips upward. Caught inline: operators sew to a metered elastic-to-fabric ratio and the roving check measures relaxed hem circumference against tolerance.
✕ Wale skew — rib lines leaning off vertical after wash. Caught at pre-final: each lot runs a wash-relax test and any skew visible at arm's length fails the bundle, since skew worsens with home laundering rather than settling.
✕ Shelf-bra seam press-through — the internal shelf seam shadowing on the outer face after pressing. Caught at the finishing gate with a raking-light check on every pressed batch.
